Match report 23/03/13 - Crawley v Jersey

Jersey U14s save the best until last

So it was here at last, the final fixture, the decider for the Sussex Under 14 League 3 championship.

With Crawley just around the corner from Gatwick the squad took the opportunity to sneak in a full English breakfast at a nearby hotel, well known to Lenny Henry.  The help yourself selection of all things fried took a beating as the boys packed the calories in for the forthcoming encounter.

A win by Jersey would see them top their league.  If they lost then there were various permutations to be considered - best to keep it simple and secure the win.

Straight from the whistle Jersey put Crawley under pressure with some great patterns of plays.

Despite some valiant defending by Crawley they could not thwart the unrelenting Jersey attack.  The first try went fittingly to birthday boy Elliot Lockley, which was duly converted by Ronan Gouyette, Ed Jones used his sheer power to break through for Jersey's second try again converted by Ronan.

The confidence and composure of this Jersey side was a pleasure to behold as the ball was expertly worked wide into the hands of a rampaging Will Flemmer for one of his trade mark sprints to the line for a superb try.  Next up another try for the birthday boy Lockley duly converted by Ronan.  The half was rounded off with a try for Tom Coutanche to make it Jersey 26 Crawley 0.

There was no need for a stirring half time talk from the coaches as the boys were doing a fine job at inspiring themselves!!

The second half continued as the first had finished with continued attacking pressure from Jersey.  The next try came from Ben Henman, converted by Finlay Laing.  Another five tries followed, one for Cameron Campbell, a second for Tom Coutanche and Will Flemmer.

Captain Will Le Heuze touched down the tenth try and sheer relentless effort from Ollie Stockwell saw him bulldoze his way to the line for Jersey's eleventh and final try, it was all over 63-0 to Jersey.

This was without doubt the squad's best performance of the season.  Finally the efforts of the coaching team were rewarded with the boys converting well drilled practise into a superbly crafted and disciplined performance which saw them win through to be worthy champions.  This was a complete team effort by each and every boy without exception, albeit that man of the match went to Ed Jones for his sheer effort!

With the league title secured attention now turns to the Siam Cup - bring it on!!

General information

Discipline:

Team discipline is crucial to the overall success of any team endeavour. Not only do disciplined teams perform well on the field, but, if teams are able to maintain good discipline both on and off the field, the overall rugby experience is far more positive for all involved. Everybody takes responsibility for what happens.
