Report

U15’s Plough through to victory!

After the rainfall over the last weeks and particularly the last few days it was a worry whether the game could take place and the quagmire of a pitch was always going to be a challenge to both teams. But it was a challenge that the Jersey boys took to with a barnstorming start that the coaches have been asking them to produce without response in all the previous games. The reason the coaches have been looking for this sort of energy became apparent as Jersey racked up two tries in the first ten minutes and put Peteresfield on the back foot for the rest of the game.

Early pressure from the forwards with some typical charges into the opposition from Danny Foley and Nick Turner pushed Petersfield back into their 22 where some good work in the ruck left Ben Cochrane with the platform to charge through from 15 yards for the first score just right of the posts. With difficult conditions underfoot Luke Huelin missed the conversion which was the story of most of the kicks on the day.

The Jersey forwards continued to dominate and push Petersfield back moving through their phases of play. With the backs starting to get into the game the play swept forward first to the right then following a ruck over to the left where desperate defence resulted in a penalty to Jersey. A quick take by Luke Huelin led to a strong run by Chris Levesley to dummy and dive over again right of the posts. This time Huelin converted.

The pressure continued to build with some crunching tackles coming in – one from Sam Fuller on his opposite number was heard all around the ground as the backs got into the spirit of it and  Jersey continued to pin Petersfield in their 22. A Jersey scrum led to a slick handling move through the backs to Levesley for a third try after he forced his way through three tackles to score in the corner.

Further forward pressure with good work from Miles Richardson and Matthew Le Bourgeois in winning a ruck just outside the 22 gave clean ball to Huelin. The scrum half passed quickly to Levesley who moved it on to James Voss to crash over left of the posts in a rehearsed move for try number four and an end to the half 22 – 0.

Petersfield did well to rally and come out fighting in the second half taking the game to Jersey with some strong possession and threatened the try line for quite a sustained time. But resolute Jersey defence with strong tackles from Foley, Turner, Burroughs and Fuller kept them out. Once the storm was weathered Jersey pushed on again to sweep up the pitch and score via Ben Cochrane after a kick through. This seemed to be the end of the Petersfield revival and Jersey pushed forwards to maintain territorial advantage and finish with a final try by Huelin in the corner for a 32 – 0 victory.

A delighted coach Scott Spencer said "the shortened more intense warm up that we adopted this time out seemed to do the trick and wake the boys up to come out at 100% instead of their previous sluggish starts – I couldn’t fault them for effort, commitment or skill in the very sapping, muddy conditions. A great performance that shows them what they can do when they put it together and follow the moves and work the coaches lay out for them each week in training. Now let’s push on and finish the season playing like this!".

Nick Turner was named as man of the match for Jersey by the Petersfield coaches.
