Hampshire U17

Jersey Youth enjoy further county success with Hampshire U17 RFU

On Wednesday 6th April, Luke Huelin, Chris Levesley and James Voss enjoyed their U17 Hampshire development training session against Dorset & Wiltshire at Salisbury RFC. Whilst penalty kicks were ruled out to encourage open play, the final score of 20-25 in favour of Hampshire was a fair result to what was a competitive encounter. For Voss, this was his first Hampshire County experience, and he was close to touching down for his first try on his debut had not the ball been spoiled by the Dorset & Wilts forwards.

On Sunday 10th April all three players earned a full Hampshire U17 cap in another close fought game against Sussex at Holbrook RFC. Sussex had recently defeated Surrey whilst Hampshire had beaten Eastern Counties on the same day that the Jersey trio enjoyed success in the Hampshire Cup Final at Trojans with Jersey Youth. The first half was dominated by strong forward play from Sussex, and whilst Hampshire defended well for 30 minutes, Sussex were soon 12-0 up. Huelin's kick from deep was followed up well by Levesley who forced extra territorial advantage deep into the Sussex half. This led to some increased pressure which narrowed the deficit to 12-7 at half time.

The late first half revival of Hampshire continued into the second half with Levesley again showing real strength and pace on the wing. Such pace could have resulted in tries on more than one occasion had it not been for the strong defensive play of Sussex. The latter however was finally broken down with the final score 12-27 to Hampshire. After the game James Voss said, "I really enjoyed my opening match. The standard and speed of play is up another level to what I am used to but the experience is highly motivating and I look forward to building on this."

Huelin, who was replaced at half time at scrum half said, "I enjoyed the game, the physicality especially from their back row and was pleased with my performance. Sussex are always a difficult side to wear down but the strength and character of the Hampshire squad showed through".

All three boys are grateful for the support from Jersey RFC Youth and the Sports Advisory Council
