Jersey Rugby Academy is delighted to offer girls the opportunity to play rugby; we are committed to providing Touch as an alternative to Rugby Union.  Initially starting with Tag Rugby for the inexperienced players we will quickly progress on to the sport of Touch Rugby.

About Touch Rugby - Touch is a minimal contact sport. The game emphasizes running, agility, passing, catching and communication. Touch is often referred to as Touch Rugby, but there is NO tackling, line-outs, scrumming or kicking involved. This makes it appealing to a wide range of ages, abilities, shapes and sizes.

We are initially targeting girls between the ages of 8 - 13, however please contact us as other ages are welcome. So, whether you: are brand new to the sport and don't even know the rules; have played Touch or Tag Rugby for a while and just love playing and hanging out with friends, come and join us.

As the squad grows we hope to provide competition to the girls both locally and off-island.

The girls' squad were thrilled to see the arrival of 10 new players today - the new recruits ranged in age and previous experience, but were all enthusiastic and eager to learn the skills of Touch Rugby.

The range of drills this morning were a real mix of speed and accuracy focusing on passing techniques.  Naturally British Bull Dog appeared on the agenda much to the delight of everyone.

As our numbers grow the girls will train more and more in age group ranges to ensure that everyone has fun but is also challenged. The new techniques shone through in the closing games today with great determination and teamwork featuring in both games.  Two ladies were awarded lady players of the week; Ellie for her enthusiasm and tenacity despite being injured today to play well, Josie for her patience and continual attention to the coaches and putting her newly acquired skills into practice.

A great morning's training and welcome to all our new players.

Sunday 12th February 2012

Our morning started a little earlier than normal with a game against one of the U9's intermediate teams. We were very grateful that the U9's agreed to play us at touch rugby. The game was played as 7 aside and both teams were focused and determined. The girls enjoyed the opportunity to play on a larger pitch and worked hard as a team to cover, defend and attack its whole width and length. The girls showed some great passing and scored some great trys.

We were delighted to win and look forward to having the chance to play the U9's again. The girls then joined the remainder of the girls to enjoy a full morning training. Although it was very cold this morning we had 13 girls training with the Banks Ladies, Claire, Lauren and Mark.

Naturally the drills included British Bull dog and some other favourites. However the highlight of the morning was learning a new playing skill of placing the ball down after a touch and team mates quickly and effectively passing the ball swiftly between them to progress the game and to move swiftly forward.

This new skill enhanced both end of training games and all the girls dramatically improved their games and confidence.

Jessica was awarded one of the Lady player's of the week for her determination, passing skills and try scoring in the game against the U9's. Gabi was named as the other lady player of the week for her focus and playing skills.

Well done girls and coaches a great fun and inspirational morning.

Sunday 5th February

What a great morning we had today. The morning started with a match against the U's; the girls adapted extremely well to playing tag rugby against a 7 strong squad form the u8's. It was a very close and exciting game; it was particularly good to see the girls making use of the whole pitch working corner to corner. Their passing was much improved and their team work was a real strength. The girls lost 12 - 11 but had a great time and look forward to having the opportunity for a rematch - very soon.

Training focused on more passing skills in both defensive and attacking tactics. Naturally the girls had their moment practicing fast moving in British Bulldog - firstly however they had to earn the opportunity to play their favourite skill game and work hard in their passing drills.

The closing matches were hard fought games - continuing to develop both attacking and defensive skills. The girls played in ages groups again and thrived in all games.

Hayley was awarded Lady Player of the Week for her enthusiasm and dedication throughout the morning - in particular in the opening match and later in the girls squad games. Abbie was our other Lady Player of the Week she had worked hard all morning, concentrating and playing well in all drills and games.

A great morning - thank you.

Sunday 29nd January 2012

Two excellent players left the pitch with certificates today; Hannah for her dedication, enthusiasm and determination in all of the drills and games. Katy for her accuracy, attention to instructions and great team play. Today Mark separated the girls into age groups and played the final games - the improvement in passing, moving across the pitch area and tactical play was clearly demonstrated. Scoring was more challenging as defending improves.

Earlier in the morning the girls had practised fast passing, running backwards whilst keeping focussed and passing accurately. Naturally the drills had to include British Bull Dog by popular demand.

The girls are working even harder as they will be showing off their skills infront of two 1st Team home team crowds. We will have the opportunity to play at half time on the 24th March and the 28th April. Additionally we hope to play against some of our Academy players from other squads in the near future.

The girls had the benefit of not only Banks Ladies and our own Acadey coaches but also a visiting 'Touch' team player - thank you for all your support.

Sunday 22nd January 2012

A great morning's training.

The girls enjoyed a variety of warm up exercises, including the squad favourite - British Bull Dog. With overall speed, accuracy and competitiveness increasing each week.

Smaller groups worked hard at passing techniques techniques. Mark encouraged all the girls to plan their passes and focus on great team work.

This week we continued with developing the girls' ball handling & evasion skills.  With the temperature low the girls took part in several high intensity game based activities with a focus on fun and fitness whilst still practicing the principals of spacial awareness and S.A.Q. (speed, agility and quickness).

The session concluded with the usual mini Touch tournament, giving the girls the opportunity to express themselves and use the skills worked on during the session.  The increasing abilities of all the girls was visible for all to see. The final games were great to watch and the smiles on the players faces summed up their continued enthusiasm. All four sides demonstrated better team work and passing skills throughout.

Once again two players were awarded for their performances today: Jenna was selected by the Banks Lady Coach for her determination, positive apprach to the game and bundles of enthusiasm and continually trying to generate team play. Aleysha was selected for her contribution to the yellow team, she covered the pitch well, worked hard to position herself well and pass the ball to and from other players.

Sunday 15th January 2012

Twelve girls worked hard on improving their passing skills on a gloriously sunny but cold morning. This week the girls were practising passing skills, enjoying energetic drills which focussed on passing the ball accurately at speed whilst deftly dodging around other team players.

The quality of the passing between the girls has continued to become ever more powerful, accurate, timely and considered. All of these skills were very evident in the final games. As the weeks progress the drills and games, in particular, are more challenging and skillful.

The Banks Ladies share their skills and enthusiasm with our own Academy coaches to afford the girls first class training.

Lead Coach, Mark awarded two player of the week titles this week; with Gabi being awarded for her excellent defending in 'British Bulldog' and Amy being awarded for outstanding attacking skills in the final games.

Sunday 8th January 2012

The girls squad were looking smarter than ever today with many of them now wearing Academy kit. The squad threw themselves into training with energy and enthusiam; they particulary enjoyed a warm up and skills game called 'empty the nest'. This skills game involved speed and passing accuracy.

The squad divided and played two touch rugby games, the girls demonstrated some impressive passing and team work

Sunday 11 December 2011

The Girl's squad are now in the swing of learning the skills and fun of touch rugby; fourteen squad players warmed up with the help of both Academy coaches and Banks Lady Rugby players.

The initial focus of the training today was passing the ball between players to move swiftly the length of the pitch. However to add a challenge the girls also learned how to run backwards to control possession and passing the ball.

Heavy rain did not deter the spirits and enthusiasm of the girls, as they played seven-a-side in a competitive and skilled game of touch.  New skills and rugby 'rules' were also learned during the game. Quick passing and working as a team won the day only just as the score was 2-1.

Jessica was presented with a medal for player of the week for her agile passing and general skills.
