We had a super weekend of rugby hosting Oxford Harlequins players, coaches, parents. In total a team of 66 arrived to support their Under 9s.
After a friendly training session and match on the Saturday morning the Sunday saw the selected children being split into Jersey Blacks and Jersey Blues. Each squad played two twenty minute matches against their counterparts. The Jersey Blues loosing their first match 8 - 0 went on to play a secondmatch as a baba mixed team with all the boys from both sides giving it a "go" and exemplifying the fun and commitment that can be experienced by playing rugby at any level.
The Jersey Blacks played two tough matches facing fierce competition from the Oxford gang. The defence from the Jersey players was spectacular and once they got into their stride their ball handling skills really shone through. The first game was won by Jersey 5 - 3 with committed tackling and quick hand being the order of the day. The intensity of the game was immense and was reflected by vociferous support from both sets of spectators urging their teams on. This was only the third time the Quins had been beaten all season! In the second game the Oxford pack came back with hard hitting tackles and pacey running and shaved a 3 - 2 win over Jersey. It was all very exciting and both groups of players (and supporters) knew they had been in a competitive and well contested match.
After an all too brief lunch, tour medals, man of the match and sportsmanship certificates were awared to the players - George Daniels and James Cannard for the Jersey Blacks and James Allan and Billy Malzard for the Jersey Blues respectively.
Oxford left stating they would love to host us in return next season (possibly incorporating a visit to Wasps) and would very much like to make this tour to Jersey an annual event.
