04/06/2010 Jersey Rugby Club had a reunion of the beachguards who have worked in Jersey over the past forty years on Thursday 3rd June at St Peter, almost all come from the Newcastle area of New South Wales in Australia and brought their wives and girlfriends with them. There are close connections with the JRFC, many of the older members will remember ’Jughead’, who captained the 1st XV in the early seventies; in fact the first game of the season in those days was against a beachguard XV. Colin Cook, father of our Spanish International Matt Cook, attended with his wife Linda and presented the Club with a Spanish International shirt donated by Matt.

An excellent photo of the players in the Burrell Barbarians v JRA Select game (in memory of Beeches captain Iain Burrell)

Good performances by our U15s for Hampshire in their 26-10 defeat of Kent U15s, George Banks propping, Dominic Mayo scoring a try from a 60 metre break and prop Luke Stratford scoring from 15 metres out. Harry Cockrane, Jordan Le Guyader and Miles Wood-McGrath all playing well in the County A Squad which lost to a very good Bridgend County A Team. (Source M Mayo)

Jersey can claim another International player - Matt Cook , one of our original Academy players, has played one game for the Spanish National XV and has been selected to play against Rumania.(If you read this, Linda or Colin, I am sure our readers would love to see a writeup and some photos)

20th March 2010
Congratulations are due to all members of the 1st Team squad and the coaching staff, led by Ben Harvey, on achieving promotion and winning the National 3 London League with two games to spare. We all look forward to the last two home games against Tring, surprise winners at St Peter last season, and Bracknell, the only side to beat us this season. Plenty of interest still left this season with the Siam Cup in Guernsey and the National 3 Competition (see below); the icing on the cake would be a day out at Twickenham for the final - what a mouth-watering prospect for all supporters, sponsors and their connections!

On Thursday the 18th March, Lord Jersey sponsored a wonderful inter-school competition at St Peters, De La Salle College being the eventual winners, and a great function in the evening featuring as a guest speaker that terrific England International and Lions wing forward Richard Hill. Our deepest thanks to Lord Jersey and David McCormack (Our Rugby Development Officer) for organising the day.

One comment Richard Hill did make, when asked about the prospect of Matt Banahan returning to the England line, did rankle; he suggested that Matt was great in the Premier League but would progress no further - Having watched two basic try-scoring opportunities wasted by the current international winger in the England-France game, I would suggest that Matt was more than capable of creating tries from a two on one opportunity.

Whilst on the subject of that game, what about the decision makers tidying up the scrum situation- why not get the scrum set up row at a time ie front row down, second row down etc, thus ensuring all are set up before the pressure goes on. This would make the situation easier to referee, and indeed safer for front rows at all levels. Another thought - how can today’s props bind on their opposite number when all players wear skin-tight thin shirts. why not get props to wear shirts made looser under the arms to ensure a secure bind. Anyone out there have any thoughts? e-mail me and I will put onto this site.

29th August 2009 - Congratulations to Ex-Academy Player Joe Ellyatt; he has been signed up by Bath Rugby Club and has already appeared in their Sevens team.

22nd August 2009 -  Visitors returning to the Island this weekend include Adrian Marriott, a competitive wing-forward who played for Jersey 1sts in the nineties, originally from Rugby but now based in Australia and Katie Arden, our ex Club Manager, who has just returned from an extended visit to Canada to check out the logging industry; good to see them both.

6th August 2009 : Good to see past players Nick Lindsay (from Whipsnade Zoo) and Lenny Galbally (from Brisbane, Australia and any zoo that will take him) visiting the Island for a week to try and freshen up the gene pool. They both look as young as ever, a little less hair than when last seen but who am I to throw stones ....
