Season 09/10
Season 09/10
1st XV. Several new players and four players from the ranks of our Academy (see the ’Player Profiles’ section of this site) have joined the 1st XV Squad; unbeaten in the pre-season friendly games, all the players and supporters look forward to another successful season in the league. ’V’ stays as captain for another term, Guy Hinks becomes 1st XV manager. The coaching set-up remains as it was last season.
2nd XV. Despite a narrow defeat by a JRA XV pre-season, the 2nd XV looks extremely strong and have a much tougher fixture list this term, including many more visiting sides - there is still a huge gap between the 2s and the rest of the Jersey Rugby Association teams but with former JRFC Chairman Chris Scott and JRFC Coach Dai Burton involved in the JRA set-up, this gap should narrow - benefitting all CI Clubs. Ian Henderson is skipper but has picked up an injury which will keep him out of the early games. The manager/coaching set-up has changed slightly, with coaches Les Small and Bob Shambrook taking a greater responsibility in selection and manager Roger Nightingale taking more of a back seat.
Wanderers. Our Veterans have a new captain this season, Iain Barclay, who is determined to improve on last season’s showing - one of the suggestions is to move the Wanderer’s games, where possible, to sunday mornings to free off those players with family commitments on saturdays. All wish him well, there is always a place in rugby for the older gentleman who have to rely on low cunning and trickery when their pace starts to fall away; the art of coarse rugby? With the collapsing of the rolling maul now outlawed again, this will allow the old chaps to get their breath back in between major plays.
Season 08/09
1st XV. In our first season in London Division 1(now called National 3 London League) our senior squad has done extremely well, third in the final table and have only been beaten convincingly by Barnes, home and away. The squad has been reasonably injury free and the new coaching setup has jelled with the players, many benefitting from the new weights regimes set by Ben Harvey. The professional players help out with the coaching at all levels and are very popular with the supporters. Several Youth players have become an integral part of the team, which is an outstanding endorsement of our Academy system. The Siam Cup game was won in May, returning the trophy to its rightful position in Jersey’s cabinet. Most club members are comfortable with our presence in the higher division and enjoy watching our premier team playing some new, unfamiliar, teams.
2nd XV. The 2nds have won the Doug Tranter Trophy and the Sugden Cup, both against the United Banks but the standard of local opposition is very variable; this makes it very difficult for players to put pressure on Coach Ben Harvey to get into the 1st XV squad. They won the Fallaise Cup against Guernsey 2nds 84 to nil.
Wanderers. Our veterans side have really struggled this season, not having won a game in the JRA League; they seem to struggle to get a team out some weekends. They lost the Nash Cup against Guernsey Vets 32 to 8 in May.
